This soap was inspired by the Aleppo soap that originated in Aleppo, Syria. This soap contains only five ingredients, olive oil, laurel oil, water, lye, and bay leaf essential oil. The natural green color is due to the extra virgin organic olive oil used in my recipe and the laurel oil gives it an earthy (rustic) appearance. My recipe contains 70% olive oil and 30% laurel oil. I use bay leaf essential oil.
What is so special about Aleppo soap? Aleppo soap has been around since the 8th Century, making it one of (if not the) "oldest" of soaps. People around the world love this soap due to its history and its many skin benefits, such as its anti-inflammatory component that helps with acne, dryness, and itchiness. Today, Aleppo soap is used around the world and it remains a favorite. One of the most interesting things about Aleppo soap is how it is made and the amount of time it requires to cure. Traditionally, Aleppo soap was made using the hot process method and taking days for the batch to "cook." In Syria this is still the method mostly used. While most handmade soaps can be used after four to six weeks after curing, Aleppo soap works best after a year of curing! The longer the cure time, the more incredible this soap becomes.
I love making traditional soaps; Aleppo inspired soap, Castile soap, and Bastille soap. Aleppo is one of my favorites and one I use the most in my everyday life. With the majority of the the recipe consisting of olive oil, this soap is ideal for people with sensitive and dry skin. Olive oil is a great moisturizer, while also cleansing the skin well. Laurel oil has anti-inflammatory properties and it can also help soothe irritated skin. I cure my Aleppo inspired soap for one year. I make this soap using the cold process method.
My Aleppo inspired soap comes in three sizes, large block, medium block and 1 inch width. I also use bay leaf essential oil to fragrance the soap. Bay leaf has a very earthy and herbal scent.
The best way to use and preserve this soap is by only wetting the soap during use and by using a washcloth. Always keep this soap in a dry and cool place. Ideally, keep this soap in a soap dish where water can drain after use. With good conservation and practices, your soap could last a long time.
Ingredients: Extra Virgin Organic Olive Oil, Laurel Berry Oil, Water, Sodium Hydroxide (Lye), Bay Leaf Essential Oil.
Scent: Bay Leaf Essential Oil has an herbal fruity scent. I find it to have a rustic, but pleasing scent that goes well with the rustic look Aleppo soap tends to have. Bay leaf essential oil is used for it's anti-bacterial properties, making it a great complementary component to the skin benefits that olive oil and laurel oil naturally have.
